Summary
Bill Roth, CMO at LogLogic, is a man that understands irony.
When he started with the IT data management company in November 2009, he understood that his company's security appliances helped its thousands of customers keep their IT data secure and in check with compliance requirements for HIPAA, SOX, PCI and other regulatory standards.
What he didn't understand was why his company's website – its public face – was being hosted on an antediluvian dedicated hosting system that was not equipped to keep threats at bay. Not one to wait around and find out, Roth took preemptive measures, found FireHost and got the site locked down. He also found some surprises along the way that resulted in a savings of $17,000/quarter.
Challenge
Roth started at LogLogic and quickly found that his website was being hosted by a mom and pop shop that offered no advanced security. "They were basically a design firm that hosted sites on a Linux box behind their own company firewall and offered their customers no security," he said. "LogLogic is in the security business. If our site was hacked it would be a PR nightmare. Our site had never been hacked and I had to keep it that way."
Roth put out a bid to find a new hosting platform and added FireHost after a trusted source recommended the company. Roth's request was simple – figure out how to secure LogLogic's website completely yet at an affordable rate.
"I questioned whether any of the vendors could meet the goal, and I expected them to tell me it would cost tens of thousands of dollars to try," said Roth. "FireHost nailed it. They gave me a proposal for a truly secure site at a very reasonable budget, and I liked working with them to boot."
Solution
Once Roth selected FireHost, the hosting provider got to work migrating the site over to its secure cloud environment. "FireHost made our migration to their cloud platform frighteningly painless," said Roth. "Usually when something sounds too good to be true, it is. But with FireHost, our migration was absolutely smooth and problem free."
Now that his site was secure, Roth started to notice some surprises he hadn't expected from his new hosting partner. He learned over time that FireHost's managed services meant that he no longer needed to rely heavily on the third-party consultants and other costly overhead that had been had been a long standing budget line item. Because of this, Roth was able to save $17,000/quarter and redirect it into other marketing initiatives. "There's a lot I can do with an extra $68,000/year and FireHost freed me to use that budget elsewhere," he said. Additionally, Roth recognized that FireHost's cloud model meant that he could scale easily to increase bandwidth when he has a new product launch or other event that drives extra traffic to the site, then just as easily scale it back down when traffic isn't as heavy. "No matter how much traffic the site experiences, FireHost keeps it performing at top speed."
After working with FireHost for so many years, Roth can't imagine hosting anywhere else. "When FireHost says they secure sites, they aren't messing around. Since starting with them, our site is more secure, it runs better and they are hands down the most affordable option for the premium service they provide. We're a high traffic business – about 170 message/second – and we have had no outages with FireHost. Their stuff just works."
